Introduction

Developed by D-lis (the minds behind Bullet Requiem), Night of Revenge is a 2D side-scrolling action RPG that wears its Dark Souls and Metroidvania influences on its ripped sleeves — then drags you through a gothic nightmare where the real horror isn't the monsters, it's what the Church did to the witches. You play as Aradia, a witch orphaned by the Inquisition, fighting through twelve interconnected districts of the city Lavarenth to rescue girls being tortured, bred, and broken by the Demon Army and the institution that created them. 33 weapon types, eight stat lines, 16 bosses, 40+ enemy species, and a corruption/H-system that triggers when you stay down just a little too long.

Aradia's Revenge — And Why It Hurts More Than You Expect

1. The lore isn't backdrop — it's the engine. Centuries ago, the Church and witches fought side-by-side against a demon invasion. When the war ended, the Church framed the witches as the source of "madoration" (the corruption turning humans into demons) and launched a massacre. The strongest witch, the Briar Witch, was executed; her cells became experiments. Aradia's family hid in a barrier village until the Church found them. She watched her father die and her sister crucified before escaping through a wall crack, then spent ten years trained by the immortal witch Wendithsa. By the time she strikes at the Church, she's already been captured once, implanted with Briar Witch cells, and awakened to a power that doesn't distinguish between enemy and self.
2. What the surface description calls "saving girls torn and tortured by monsters" is darker in practice. The rescue system is real — 21+ dynamic rescue events scattered across the map, from the imprisoned knight-lady in the monastery to the samurai girl behind glass in the Ranch upper floor — but the world fights back. The Ranch ("pasture") is the notorious low point: a facility where nobles "breed and train" human stock, including NPCs who helped you earlier. Iburisi the witch saving a cat, or the bell-ringer Suzune — no one's safe from the setting's inertia. Saving them costs progression routes, specific keys, and sometimes accepting you're too late.
3. The dual-ending structure hinges on the final confrontation with the Briar Witch — who turns out to be Aradia's own clone, sent by the Pope to replace her. Choose to join her and you stand atop a mountain of corpses with bloody eyes, knowing slaughter solved nothing. Choose to fight and win, and Aradia understands: every kill extends the chain of revenge. "Let revenge end here… don't let my life be dyed by it in the next life." The title-screen BGM hides the sound of dragging chains. This isn't a power fantasy. It's a tragedy you play through.

Combat — Soulslike Stamina, Metroidvania Exploration, 33 Weapons

1. The mechanical skeleton is familiar to anyone who's suffered through Lordran. Stamina bar (SP) governs attacks, dodges, and parries. Eight stats — HP, STR, DEX, INT, MAG, DEF, LUK, and something the community calls "potential" — are allocated at Altars (bonfires in all but name). Death doesn't hard-reset the world but does drop your karma and scatter collected souls. The dodge is a directional double-tap or F-key; parry is defense + W with a tight timing window; successful parries stagger enemies and let you hold E for an execution move whose animation varies by weapon type.
2. Weapon variety is where D-lis shows off. 33 types ranging from witch swords and rapiers to halberds, heavy greatswords, cross-shaped spears, staves, and the late-game "White Maiden's Exorcist" straight sword unlocked via the underground parish NPC rescue. Every weapon has unique attack frames — the starter Witch Sword is fast and light; the nodachi "Nameless" swings like a truck but hits twice as hard. Second-tier upgrades offer "Heterodox Reinforcement" that can flip the weapon's entire moveset — Nameless becomes an iaido-draw greatsword; Church Knight Straight Sword alters its scaling profile. Rings, armor pieces (tailor kits from fallen nun-knights), and magic spells round out the buildcraft.
3. Map design is 2D interconnected-boxology with traps that would make Miyazaki nod — breakable walls, explosive barrels you push into shortcut seals, invisible H-traps in floor tiles, and late-game areas like the Lower Ward and Eternal Prison that will have you checking a wiki. The 16 bosses scale from gimmicky (Eight-Arm Demon's rockfall, Fish Bishop's phase transitions, Lion Warrior's gold-coin reflection mechanic) to genuinely punishing (Thorn Witch's five-phase marathon). Community data puts average boss attempts at ~4.7, comparable to Hollow Knight. Controller strongly recommended — KB/M has known input bugs.

The H-System — QTE Struggles, Execution Scenes, and "Virgin or Slut" Routing

1. This is where the game diverges from its inspirations. 46 animated CG scenes, triggered by a deliberate design choice: when an enemy downs you, you get a prompt to "resist now" or lie there. Stay down and the scene plays — everything from groping and tentacle-work to full intercourse, rape-by-execution, and pregnancy mechanics from black-sludge traps in the lab zone. QTE sequences let you mash LMB/arrow keys to fill an escape gauge mid-assault; settings let you invert to "attacker perspective" QTE, disable resistance entirely for instant scenes, or toggle "virgin-protection magic" and "clothing destruction" independently. The three-layer defense (armor durability → virgin flag → QTE) means you can tune the risk.
2. The "virgin vs. slut" dual routing is a meme in the community for good reason. Every scene has a defloration variant and a "broken-in" variant — losing your virginity at different story beats doesn't nerf the erotic weight, per the dev's philosophy that "the hymen is decoration, only a true degenerate would care." You can technically virgin-clear the whole game. Most players don't. The corruption stat silently gates certain dialogues, NPC reactions (Kadoraine/ "K-chan" the upper inquisitor has radically different post-defeat treatment depending on your purity), and outfit degradation — armor literally tears off as defense drops, which is why streaming clips of this game are a censor's nightmare.
3. Rescue events and H-content intersect in nasty ways. Beat Kadoraine (the white-haired inquisitor who prays over your corpse) and she gets dragged into the Ranch's rotation offscreen if you don't intervene fast enough on a later route. The "pregnancy" status from certain boss/environment interactions tracks a two-day cycle visible in the status menu. It's bleak, it's excessive, and it's absolutely central to why the game has the reputation it does — the lewd content isn't garnish, it's how the world communicates its cruelty.
